Wollongong Art Gallery, the largest regional art museum in Australia, presents a diversity of exhibitons this summer... from celebration of the surf to scrap culture. Entry is free to all exhibitions. Local: Current 2013, on display until February 2, is the fifth in a series of yearly exhibitions which investigate local artists' practice and features the work of Natasha Benten, Sue Bessell, Moira Kirkwood, Nick Pike, Shining Rainbow, Robert Reid, Kate Stehr,Vyvian Wilson, Emily Windon and Zuza Zochowski. The Green Cathedral celebrates the history and culture of surfing on the south coast. The exhibition includes contemporary surf art, classic boards and memorabilia, photography and film. Shooting the Curl (until March 2) features photographs of local breaks, barrel riding, underwater waves by contemporary surf photographers and a looping slide show of 'Gong surf images from private Illawarra albums.The Boardroom (until March 9) includes an impressive display of boards, and local surf memorabilia from deep within the garages of local shapers and collectors. Presence and Absence, curated by Dr Michael, includes works in traditional and new media . Artists Ben Cauchi, Paula Dawson, David Eastwood and Leonie Watson explore the ambiguous relationship between presence and absence. Malcolm Benham: Scrap Culture 1980 -- 2014, a retrospective includes drawing, mixed media, sculpture and painting all connected by an understanding of form and content. The Gallery Bookshop, located on the ground floor of Wollongong Art Gallery,offers a changing range of posters, book titles, art journals and greeting cards as well as unique gift ideas.
