South Coast Leisure Times : Winter 2017
www.southcoastleisuretimes.com.au South Coast 15 Kangaroo Valley Kangaroo Valley is sheltered by national parks and nature reserves that preserve the superb escarpment scenery and the special feel of the valley. Though Kangaroo Valley village is in a hollow, it is far from sleepy. It has history but it is very up to date. Long a popular tourist destination, the Valley is now actively encouraging sustainable tourism, a very appropriate concept for a place whose history, inspiration, landscape and life is so linked to the surrounding bushland. Kangaroo Valley was the first mainland town to be plastic bag free. It was also the location of the first Repower Shoalhaven community- funded solar power project. The group developed a nine kilowatt donation-based solar power system for the Kangaroo Valley Community Centre. Visitors to the valley have many options. There is plenty of physical action - walking, canoeing, bike riding, horse riding, swimming and fishing. There is also a great range of bushwalking in the surrounding national parks, Morton, Budderoo, Budgong, and nature reserves, Kangaroo River, Cambewarra Range and Barren Grounds. There are two big music and arts events in the valley each year, the Kangaroo Valley Arts Festival and the Folk Music Festival. And of course there is wining, dining and simply relaxing amid magnificent scenery. Established in 1984, Kangaroo Valley Woodcrafts is known for its Australian made wooden products from more than 60 Australian woodworkers in 70 different woods. The shop has an extensive range of rocking horses, doll houses, bowls, chopping boards, puzzles and toys. For children, there’s a wide range of toys and cubby furniture, traditional toys such as hobby horses, wooden trains, and one of Australia’s largest range of rocking horses, doll houses and puzzles. There’s plenty for adults too, including wooden fruits, burl coffee tables, mirrors, clocks, bowls and the best-selling chopping boards. These come in 12 sizes and styles. As a tribute to Kangaroo Valley’s history as a main source of Australian red cedar, there’s an exclusive range of jewellery boxes, solitaire, dominoes and bowls in this timber. The Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Village Museum is a place family and friends can enjoy a picnic, a bush walk and wander through the museum. Visitors can step back into the 19th century with historic buildings, saddlery, settler’s hut and forge, all set in a magnificent park with free barbecue facilities for museum visitors. The buildings are built to the standards of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and stocked with artefacts from that era. The museum has talking history and visual displays. Visit the dairy, forge, school house, settler’s cottage, Archie Chittick Museum, war remembrance room and much more.
