South Coast Leisure Times : Winter 2017
10 South Coast www.southcoastleisuretimes.com.au Northern villages to Wollongong The Spring into Corrimal Family Festival is Corrimal’s longest running annual event and the largest one day free family festival within the Illawarra and regional NSW, attracting crowds in excess of 60,000. Spring into Corrimal has always had a strong connection to the local area. The festival operates on a not-for- profit basis and is organised by a dedicated team of volunteers. This year’s date is Sunday, September 10. It will include over 280 market stalls, entertainment, live music and a grand parade. A designated area will feature storytelling and entertainment especially for small children and young people. There will be three stages featuring a variety of performances from local bands and community organisations. There is plenty of fun with amusement rides, face painting, show bags, car boot sale and raffles. Visitors will be met by stilt walkers, characters and talented local buskers. Local restaurants and cafes will set up outside with a taste-tempting array of treats. Food stalls and vans also offer tastes from around the world in Memorial Park. See www.springintocorrimal.com.au Nestled in the fold of the Illawarra escarpment, Stanwell Park is noted for its beaches, bushland and the majesty of Bald Hill. Australia’s pioneer of flight, Lawrence Hargrave, is a former resident of the village and he carried out many of his experiments at Bald Hill and the beach below. The main coastal road, Lawrence Hargrave Drive/Grand Pacific Drive, maintains the link with history and also provides magnificent views of the coast north from Bulli via the Sea Cliff Bridge and winds through many picturesque coastal villages. At Stanwell Park, don’t miss visiting Articles Fine Art Gallery, owned by John and Frances Vander. John has been a full time artist for over 36 years and has won many awards. His works can be seen on permanent display at Articles Fine Art Gallery, along with that of more than 40 other artists, where visitors can also admire paintings, pottery, glass and sculptures. See pages 8-9 for more details. The Bald and the beautiful Spring into festival fun The magnificent Sea Cliff Bridge is a link between northern coastal villages Coalcliff and Clifton, which can be driven, cycled or walked.
