South Coast Leisure Times : Autumn 2017
10 South Coast www.southcoastleisuretimes.com.au Stanwell Park to Wollongong Nestled in the fold of the Illawarra escarpment, Stanwell Park is noted for its beaches, bushland and the majesty of Bald Hill. Australia’s pioneer of flight, Lawrence Hargrave, is a former resident of the village and he carried out many of his experiments at Bald Hill and the beach below. The main coastal road, Lawrence Hargrave Drive/Grand Pacific Drive, maintains the link with history and also provides magnificent views of the coast north from Bulli via the Sea Cliff Bridge and winds through many picturesque coastal villages. At Stanwell Park, don’t miss visiting Articles Fine Art Gallery, owned by John and Frances Vander. John has been a full time artist for over 36 years and has won many awards. His works can be seen on permanent display at Articles Fine Art Gallery, along with that of more than 40 other artists, where visitors can also admire paintings, pottery, glass and sculptures. Art from Articles comes with a history of the artist and the story behind the work, giving the collector plenty of interesting dinner conversation. See pages 8-9 for more details. Heading further south, the Illawarra Grevillea Park at Bulli is waiting to be explored. The not-for-profit society will host open days on the weekends of May 6-7 and May 13-14 for $5 entry. At this time of year there will be a diverse range of plants from across Australia in flower. The park is a relaxed bushland setting with fantastic rainforest walks and barbecue facilities. Plants can also be purchased. The Bald and the beautiful The magnificent Sea Cliff Bridge is a link between northern coastal villages Coalcliff and Clifton, which can be driven, cycled or walked.
