South Coast Leisure Times : Spring 2016
28 South Coast www.southcoastleisuretimes.com.au The Shoalhaven is renowned for its oysters, and in particular Greenwell Point is home to some of the world’s best. The local oyster industry is in the process of taking its high quality produce to the world and South Coast oyster farmers have begun to send their fare to Asia. Greenwell Point oysters are part of Australia’s Oyster Coast, along with other major estuaries between Shoalhaven and the Victorian border. The Australian Oyster Coast was launched at the Narooma Oyster Festival in 2013. World champion oyster opener of 1984 Jim Wild produces between 10 and 15,000 dozen oysters a year from his Greenwell Point base. He said it was a great thing for the industry, with consumers able to be confident they are buying fresh produce. The drive out to the coast from Nowra winds through spectacular rich green farmlands with classic Australian farmhouses, barns and hay sheds. You might even have to wait while a herd of contented cows wander across the road on their way to the milking sheds. The children love it. It’s about 20 minutes to the coastal villages of Greenwell Point, Culburra Beach, Callala Bay and Beach, Currarong and Point Perpendicular. Greenwell Point is a great place for a day trip to pick up some fresh oysters or grab some fish and chips by the water.
