South Coast Leisure Times : Autum 2016
52 South Coast www.southcoastleisuretimes.com.au Mogo Just 10 minutes’ drive south of Batemans Bay, Mogo is one of the most popular destinations on the coast where shoppers can enjoy the great variety of cafes, galleries, antiques, fashion, arts, crafts, hobbies, homewares and lifestyle product shops. Most of these are run by the proprietors offering excellent service. Mogo Village is home to some stores which sell sweet treats, like lollies and fudge, so indulge your cravings. You can burn off the energy by walking the streets. It’s interesting to note the different buildings created by early settlers in contrast to today’s structures. The Original Gold Rush Colony in Mogo is an authentically recreated Australian 1850s Gold Rush era village. It is a multi award- winning tourism attraction, gold history and Australian culture educational facility, with on-site accommodation set on 13 bushland acres within the Mogo State Forest. Located just 200m off the Princes Highway (behind the Mogo Village township, near the Mogo Zoo), between Batemans Bay and Moruya. The Gold Rush Colony runs Historical Gold Rush Day Tours for individuals and tour groups. All the buildings, including the administration and on-site accommodation harmonise with the theme of the 1850s Australian gold rush days. The gold rush theme park takes you back in time to an era before iPhones and iPads, to discover life as it was for our pioneers on the goldfields. The change from the 21st century begins as soon as you cross the path to the machinery and printing shed which stores engines from early last century. Cross the time-warp bridge and find yourself in a bygone world of little timber and stone buildings - a replica Goldfields village. Sounds of the past may break the forest silence, when you hear the slap of the water wheel, the crunching of the quartz and the belting out of Betsy the steam engine. The site is also suitable for holiday accommodation for small and large groups, as well as school excursions and camps. It can even be used to host a classic country wedding or other function or event. There are traditional or tailored catering services to meet your needs. See the website www.goldrushcolony. com.au for more details. The Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens are situated on a 42 hectare forest site five kilometres south of Batemans Bay and four kilometres north of Mogo. The gardens display plant species that occur naturally in the collecting region. The site abounds with a wide variety of flora and fauna; the original flora of the area includes many of the 2000 species found within the collecting region, and the fauna consists of kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, possums, echidnas, snakes, lizards, frogs and many bird species. Display gardens, walking tracks, picnic and barbecue facilities, a herbarium, information centre and cafe are some of the features to be found in the gardens complex, which can be found on the Princes Highway. The gardens are open from 9am until 4pm Wednesdays to Sundays, public holidays and all school holidays. It will be closed on Good Friday. Admission is free.
