South Coast Leisure Times : Autum 2016
34 South Coast www.southcoastleisuretimes.com.au Bendalong/Lake Conjola Bendalong is real holidays – the moment you arrive and get out of your car you will feel it. Take in the fresh, clean sea air filtered through the surrounding native fauna, the sounds of the sea and chattering birds. Once settled there is no need to use your car at all. An easy 10 minute stroll takes you to the local general/liquor store with everything you will need and there’s an alfresco cafe. A stay in Bendalong is perfect for a recharge. Local fishermen at the boat ramp will direct you to the best spots. The boat harbour is also the ideal launch for water skiing and barbecue areas mean you can enjoy a meal by the water. Keep your eyes open for a pod of dolphins or sit and watch stingrays feed from the fishermen’s catch. Washerwomans Beach is a sheltered spot. The northern end is ideal for families, with a safe place for young children to swim and play with barbecue facilities. This spot is also a snorkeller’s delight, with beautiful reef areas to explore. Walkers will revel in a stroll around the picture-perfect shores of North Bendalong, Dee’s, Flatrock and Monument beaches. Surfers should head to Inyadda Beach on the southern side of Bendalong. There is also great snorkelling near the cave on the north eastern end of Inyadda. From here visitors can take a shor t walk along the beach to Manyana or a drive to Cunjarong Point, to renowned swell at Green Island. There’s no need to leave the family dog at home because Bendalong is one of the few pet friendly areas in the Shoalhaven. All dogs are required to be on leash at all times, except when in off leash designated council managed areas. Dogs should be under the control of a competent handler at all times. Washerwomans Beach is a 24 hour off leash exercise area. Flatrock Beach however is a prohibited area, due to endangered shorebird nesting sites. If you are after a more cosmopolitan experience, the thriving village of Milton is a 20 minute country drive away. It’s another five minutes to Mollymook’s famous beaches and golf courses. Discover, or perhaps rediscover Lake Conjola on a 2.5km leisurely walk with an experienced local guide. Lake Conjola Tours will run on April 20, May 7 and May 20 from 10am until noon. Hear surprising stories of this beautiful South Coast lake and surrounds – fishing, floods, the fascinating past of first European settler Thomas Kendall, heritage-listed holiday houses and more. See an amazing range of local wildlife (kangaroo sightings guaranteed), take in magnificent sea/lake vistas and enjoy a lakeside cuppa. Lake Conjola Tours take place on Budawang Country. The tour will go ahead in most weather conditions, but participants should make sure they wear suitable shoes for walking. Lake Conjola Tours meeting point is at the lakeside outside Lake Conjola Post Office. Bookings are required and can be done online at www.kotahitourism.com or by phoning 4456 4848 or 0419 836 341.
